MY MPEG Goals for the Future:
BUILDING up our COLLECTIVE POWER
💪🏻 POWER THROUGH COMMUNITY 👥👥
• Creating recurring classification/craft-specific member meetings - recurring safe spaces where members of the same craft or classification can congregate: discuss issues, share solutions, build community, change the culture, and form goals that are communicated to MPEG leadership and summarized in General Membership Meetings. We often all feel siloed in our own bubbles, but we are so much stronger together, talking it out and finding solutions jointly.
• Creating more bonding opportunities with the other Hollywood locals - volunteer opportunities, marches, fundraisers- any way where we can learn about each other’s crafts, differences and similarities, for more effective joint bargaining. Again - stronger together!
💪 POWER THROUGH COMMUNICATION 📱
• Transitioning us out of toxic platforms like Facebook and into a smart, easy to use, and secure communication platform of our own where our data isn’t scraped by corporations and informational posts arent buried to favor controversial posts, due to an algorithm. I envision a Slack-like interface with dedicated channels for specific classifications/crafts, as well as tech troubleshooting, and member-wide community discussions that people can opt in or out of. It could be an immense hub for us to internally organize our membership, and to coordinate prior to and during negotiations.
💪🏼 POWER THROUGH EDUCATION 🧠
• Demystifying the negotiations process to harness member involvement towards achievable goals within the framework in which labor unions exist.
• Now after I helped handle contract education through Know Your Rights, it’s time to improve orientation, so new and existing members learn and retain the knowldege of what it means to be a union member, beyond the standard perks and obligations.
• Building an effective financial literacy class that members would actually want to attend, to make us more resilient to economic downturns.
• Stretch goal - I think we should have an engaging MPEG Podcast both for members and the general public to learn about our union and our crafts- both to promote and to educate.
💪🏽 POWER THROUGH INCLUSION 🙌🏽
• Involving members' input as much as possible in the negotiations to give them a connection to the process. In addition to classification caucuses and a thorough survey, I would advocate for creating Article Committees in local negotiations, so that members who are engaged and interested in specific proposals, can provide input into the formation of that proposal, especially when quick revisions are needed during the process, it would be useful to touch base with an invested group to see if the pivot would still align with what we need. More involvement and buy-in from members during negotiations = more trust in the process, a better understanding of the resulting tentative agreement, and more members that can explain the tentative agreement to their peers.
• Making sure that our Stewards program has diverse members of all backgrounds, so that every single member has a fellow member that they feel comfortable turning to, who can relate to their experiences and offer advice.
💪🏾 POWER THROUGH LEGISLATION 🏛️
Policies I would advocate for that our union, and our country, should achieve in the future:
A federal tax incentive (and/or penalty) for Film and TV production (inclusive of post production)
A Post Production specific tax incentive for California, similar to the one in NY.
Healthcare as a basic right for all, while preserving our MPI benefit plan as an additional plan to supplement the basic one.
